Dr. Dusseldorp: leading an Australian first clinical trial

Dr Joe Dusseldorp (@drjoedusseldorp), Specialist Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeon and COBL Research Institute Faculty Member, explains a new, first in Australia, clinical trial he is leading at COBL.
 
This trial explores the use of a new device to improve monitoring for patients who have had breast reconstructions as part of their cancer treatment. The t-Stat device allows clinicians to continuously check the blood flow to the DIEP flap.
 
The study will assess the impact of this device on both patients’ wellbeing and recovery, as well as nurses’ workloads, who without the device need to complete laborious physical checks, sometimes every half an hour.

Dr. Ciara McGoldrick: How T-Stat Helped Save a Patient’s Flap

Dr. Ciara McGoldrick, Consultant Plastic Surgeon at Belfast City Hospital, Ireland, shares a real bilateral free flap case demonstrating T-Stat’s impact on flap monitoring. Although the flap appeared clinically normal and the Doppler signal remained present, T-Stat detected an arterial issue caused by a kink in the vessels, providing an early warning that traditional monitoring had not identified.
