What you need to know about
FirstScan® Lori™ ix Monitoring

What is the FirstScan Lori ix?

The Lori ix is an investigational device that measures the composition and metabolism of tissue. Lori is intended to be sensitive to fat, water, and other tissue components, as well as to metabolism, angiogenesis and local tissue ischemia, without invasive sampling. Each of these features can differ between breast cysts, benign growths, inflammatory conditions, local tissue infection, and even cancer.

What is the benefit of the FirstScan Lori ix?

In human subjects under investigational use, the Lori has been shown to characterize the hemoglobin, fat, and water content of human tissue in real time, and to calculate a metabolic index (see licensed technology papers from University of California and University of Pennsylvania).

The device is in Phase I/II trials in 2,000 women to assess the predictive sensitivity and specificity of the determinations.

The device is an extension of the Spectros T-Stat platform, developed in conjunction with the University of Pennsylvania, University of California, Stanford University, and NIM Inc.. In animals, the real-time capillary-venous oxygenation of tumors have been measured with T-Stat, using a noninvasive measure, as shown below:

Noninvasive Oxygen Measurement

This value is abnormal for many tumors, as shown below:

T-Stat Values Reflect Tumor Ischemia

Further, the composition of different breast conditions has been shown to differ (Tromberg, 2000, and others), as shown below:

Measures on basal skin carcinoma showed an increased metabolic level well above normal, as shown:

What should I normally see?

Values in health and disease are currently under Phase I / II study.

How long does it take to place a T-Stat sensor?

A FirstScan Lori scan of both breasts requires approximately 5 minutes.

What care does a FirstScan Lori sensor require?

FirstScan probes require a calibration step, which takes under 15 seconds.

FirstScan tissue analysis is sensitive to free blood under the probe, which oxygenates in room air and elevates the hemoglobin and saturation reading. Conversely, pressure on the probe during scanning can impede blood flow, and alter the metabolic reading. Probe cleaning with an alcohol swab or anti-bacterial wipe is recommended between patients.

What if I have more questions?

This device is investigational, so questions are common. Read the FirstScan Lori brochure.
