Reducing Post Aortic Repair Colon Ischemia Using T-Stat®

If you perform AAA repair, your patients may benefit from the recently-approved T-Stat® Ischemia Detection System. (1,2)

Between 1-3% of patients undergoing open or percutaneous aortic repair develop moderate to severe colon ischemia (up to 36% after ruptured aneurysm), and of these, many of these die before leaving the hospital. (3,4) Other reduced-perfusion surgical cases can also lead to colon ischemia, such as cardiac procedures.

T-Stat® is a catheter-based ischemia detection system that may improve AAA outcome by detecting the onset of colon ischemia in real time, before damage becomes irreversible.

In a controlled, independent study of 562 patients at Stanford University and University of California, patients with colon ischemia detected by T-Stat® had shorter ICU stays (29 vs. 2 days) and lower mortality (0% vs. 55%) than control patients with colon ischemia. (5)

In this study, T-Stat® changed outcome because the surgery team was alerted when a tissue became ischemic, and then had the opportunity to revascularize prior to infarction. (2,5). Patients with ischemia demonstrated colon saturation in the range of 0-11% (StO2%). This is substantially lower than normal colon saturation, as shown below:
