Reducing Injury After Aortic Aneurysm Repair Using T-Stat®

If you have an
Aortic Aneurysm and are going to have a stent or surgical repair, you may benefit from
having your doctor use the recently-approved T-Stat®
Ischemia Detection System during surgery.
Recent studies
have shown that up to 3 in 100 patients develop moderate to severe
reductions in blood flow to the colon or gut during stent or surgical repair of the
aorta, and that many of these
patients die from complications of this low blood flow before leaving the hospital.
Stat® is a
system that may improve AAA results by
detecting the onset of low gut blood flow during the surgery, before
damage becomes irreversible.
In study of 562 patients at Stanford University and
University of California, patients with poor gut blood flow detected by T-Stat®
had shorter stays in intensive care (29 vs. 2 days) and lower death rates (0% vs. 55%) than
patients with poor gut blood flow who did not use T-Stat®.
T-Stat® changed
outcome because the surgeon was alerted when a tissue had low blood flow,
and had the opportunity to restore blood flow before the gut died.
If you have questions, print this page for your
doctor, and ask
if T-Stat® may be right for you.
